People on the web are completely divided on AI right now.
Some people love it, while others scroll past thinking: “Oh, great. Another piece of AI slop… yada, yada, yada.”
Then there’s the underlying anxiety: Is it going to replace me at work?
The debate is happening because the shift is already here. Factories are automating, European markets are feeling the pinch, and tasks are being streamlined everywhere. Sure, jobs that require deep human touch—like taking care of the sick or babysitting—might not be replaced anytime soon.
AI might not replace you, but someone who knows how to use it just might.
As a coach, I don’t look at AI as a threat. To me, it’s a sparring partner—a tool to sharpen my thinking and refine what I already know. But how do you actually use it to brush up your workplace communication skills without getting lost in the tech?
The 80/20 Rule of Workplace English
Have you heard of the Pareto Principle? It states that 20% of your effort produces 80% of your results.
Imagine you have 100 friends. You don’t hang out with all 100 every weekend—you probably only kick it with 20 of them (sometimes even less).
English at work operates the exact same way. If you’re struggling to communicate on global calls, you don’t need to master English literature. You just need the core 20% of communication models and conversational structures to clearly relay your strategic thoughts to your boss and team.
So many professionals waste years memorizing endless vocabulary lists and complex grammar rules they will never use in a real meeting. Here’s the ironic part: the more “big words” you drop into a call, the blurrier your message becomes.
You are not Shakespeare writing a play. You are a leader your company counts on to streamline processes, solve bottlenecks, and achieve business goals. Keep it clean. Keep it clear.
How to Train Your AI “Sparring Partner”
If you are an autodidact—a self-starter who loves learning without needing a formal classroom—AI can be an absolute superpower. But the key lies entirely in your prompting.
Think of AI like a car: it’s a powerful machine, but you are still the driver.
If you give it lazy instructions, you’ll get AI slop. It’s the classic rule of GIGO: Garbage In, Garbage Out. But if you feed it specific, high-context instructions, it will sharpen the way you think and articulate ideas—not just in English, but across your entire industry.
Whether you work in logistics, marketing, finance, IT, medicine, or executive management, you can use AI to build custom communication blueprint for your exact role.
Try a Prompt Like This:
“Using the Pareto Principle (80/20 rule), give me a list of the most common, high-impact English phrases used in [Logistics/Finance/Marketing]. Give me realistic workplace scenarios I can practice so I can communicate clearly with global colleagues.”
Use AI to help you draft emails that sound natural, professional, and matched to your company’s culture—not overly formal or robotic.
Note: Please proofread your emails before hitting send! I once read a work email from a colleague, and at the very bottom, it said:
“Note from ChatGPT: Please feel free to modify this message.”
It was hilarious, but it happens when you’re in a rush. Remember: you are the human. You know your tone better than the algorithm. Adjust the sentence structure, remove the AI notes, and make it yours.
What AI Can’t Do (The Blind Spots)
So, if AI can generate phrases and polish emails, why do top professionals still hire a human coach?
Because AI cannot teach cadence, strategic pauses, or human presence.
AI can give you a script, but it can’t teach you how to command a room screen-to-screen. A human coach brings real-world context into the room. When we discuss a high-stakes scenario or a workplace conflict, we share real experiences and stories. That emotional connection is what makes learning stick.
Furthermore, if you aren’t a natural self-studier, relying purely on AI can feel overwhelming. It dumps mountains of information on you without giving you a compass or a clear sense of direction.
Then there are the physical blind spots AI simply cannot catch:
- Subtle mispronunciations that confuse native listeners.
- Mouth placement and mechanics (like the difference between voiced/voiceless “th” sounds).
- Phonetic confusion (like swapping “j” and “ch” or “p” and “f”).
AI can check your text, but only a human eye and ear can fine-tune your live delivery.
Ready to Upgrade Your Executive Presence?
Whether you’re an emerging professional, a senior director, or an ambitious university graduate looking to stand out in global calls, don’t let communication bottlenecks hold your career back.
Think of it like cooking:
AI is like an advanced stove. It helps you cook fast, efficiently, and daily. A human coach is like a professional chef. They step into the kitchen with you to refine your technique, elevate your presentation, and help you serve up a world-class delivery every single time.
Use AI as your daily appliance, but bring in a coach when you’re ready to master the art.
